Sample Lesson Plan
The lesson begins with bell work reaching to the students prior knowledge and previous lessons taught. This is an example of Standard 4 (d) of InTASC Standards. Next, we jump into the lesson by comparing weapons used during the Napoleonic Wars and weapons used in World War I. This part of the lesson uses pictures for students so see and understand the differences between the weapons. This is an example of Standard 4 (a, b, f, and g) and Standard 5 (c) of InTASC Standards. For intermittent closure students need to list at least 3 new military weapons used during WWI. This assessment is an example of Standard 6 (a, b, e, g, j, k, and r). The intermittent closure matches the sub-objective, and the teaching strategy helps the students to be able to do the intermittent closure. Next students need to be able to define trench warfare in their own words. To do this the lecture continues on trench warfare, and a note-taker is provided to help students follow along with the content. The note-taker also differentiates instruction for those students that may need extra help. A video is shown that further explains trench warfare. This is an example of Standard 4 (a, b, c, e, g, l, q, and r), Standard 5 (c and l), Standard 7 (a, b, c, j, k, and n), and Standard 8 (a, e, g, l, n, o, and p) of the InTASC Standards. The intermittent closure for this part of the lesson is for students to define in their own words what trench warfare is. Again this matches up with the one of the sub-objectives of the lesson, and demonstrates the use of different kinds of assessments to check on student understanding. It is an example of Standard 6 (a, b, e, g, j, k, and r) of InTASC Standards. Another teaching strategy used in the lesson is asking the students opinion on what they have learned so far. This is an example of Standard 8 (d, h, i, l, m, q, and s) of InTASC Standards. This strategy encourages students to make predictions on what they have learned so far and voice their ideas. Students will then continue the lecture on types of casualties in WWI, and finish that with a pair/share activity. The pair/share activity helps students again with voicing their ideas and checks for understanding and fits Standard 8 (i) of InTASC Standards. Finally, the lesson ends with a graphic organizer students will fill out to compare/contrast WWI and the Napoleonic Wars to demonstrate how different WWI was to earlier wars. This is an example of Standard 8 (a, b, e, h, j, l, p, and q) of InTASC Standards. The graphic organizer helps students to organize their thoughts and new information. The organizer needs to be turned in at the end of class which will help me to check for understanding and adapt for the next lesson.
